If Pinterest is to be believed, you can put chalkboard paint on absolutely anything. Not only can you transform every item in your house, you can do so using DIY chalkboard paint. To test this out, I called up some friends, rounded up a random assortment of things at the thrift store, and brought out the giant box of interior latex paint samples I have sitting in my garage.

I read a range of tutorials before we started, and the most common recipe was 1 cup of paint mixed with 2 tablespoons of unsanded tile grout. It is really important to note that we used interior latex paint for all of our mixtures. We also used chalkboard paint pens on our non-porous surfaces, and as you’ll see below those were a fail as well.

I tried to half the recipe and wound up with a chunky mess that looked like this. When you are a DIY novice, don’t deviate from the directions.

A few of the attempts turned out really well, including this paper-covered tin lid that my friend plans to use as a storage box. She painted the top, let it dry in the sun, and conditioned the top by rubbing a pieces of chalk all over it and then wiping it down with a towel. Don’t forget to condition your chalkboard paint projects after they’re dry!

Her daughter created a purple mixture. and painted a custom clipboard. The DIY latex chalkboard paint worked great on the wooden part of the clipboard, but immediately started peeling off the metal. Tape the metal portion off before you start if that’s going to bother you.

The tin box lid, clipboard, and the mini pot growing chives were all Wins, but everything else we tried was a Fail. I hope that readers will have advice and tutorials that will help us adjust our approach and give us longer-lasting results.

The first Fail was chalkboard paint wine glass stems. The finish was lumpy, the chalkboard paint pens we used to label them with wouldn’t wipe off, and it was obvious to all of us that even the tiniest bit of wear would have the paint peeling up.

I used a stencil to try to create a cute pattern on this vase, but ran into several problems before the label eventually peeled off. The paint dried to the label and I had to cut it out with a utility knife which led to imperfect corners, and when I tried to wipe the chalkboard paint pencil off the label began to peel up after a very small amount of pressure was applied.

My favorite idea from the day was a chalkboard label for a casserole dish. Don’t you hate it when you go to a party and you have no idea what you are scooping on to your plate? I created a rectangular shape using painters tape, brushed on my green chalkboard paint mixture, and let it dry. Our previous attempts to apply this paint to smooth surfaces had led to peeling edges, so I took my friend’s advice and painted the edges with clear nail polish. It seemed like this might actually work!

Fail. I took this to one party, wrote the label for my salad on the outside, but when I brought my dish home and very carefully washed it in the sink the label began to pucker and when a stream of water ran over it the label slid right off.

This is where you guys come in! I really want to successfully apply DIY chalkboard paint to non-porous surfaces like glass or glazed porcelain. Do I need to change the type of paint I’m using? Have you had success with the chalkboard paint pens? Tell me how I can succeed at this, and I’ll have another go with the wine glass, vase, and casserole dish, using your suggestions. Write a tutorial style blog post and in Part 2 of the chalkboard paint edition of the Pinterest Test Party I’ll link to your blog so Pinterst Fail users can click over to your space and give your advice a try.

Leave advice or tutorial blog post links in the comment section of this post. Please note that I will only be featuring blog post tutorials that have a link back to pinterestfail.com within the text of the post.
